A sweetly perfumed nose of tar, currants, anise, concentrated blackberries, elegant oak stylings, minerals and layers of spice. This is the epitome of the Italian Bordeaux-style reds made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It is simply magnificent in the mouth with earthy dark fruits, toasty oak-inspired spices, crushed currants, lush texture, touches of liquorice, mocha, vanilla and a finish that lasts minutes. One to dream about.
The ripasso method involves pouring the new Valpolicella wine over the lees of the Amarone production of the same year to give it more concentration. Dense purple in colour, this wine has a cedary, tobacco and cherry nose with spicy, toasty oak notes. It's medium- to full-bodied, dry with a rich cherry flavour and balancing acidity.
Clear medium yellow. Moderate nose of apple, lemon, banana and lots of oak. Light-bodied with lemon custard and more apple flavours and soft acidity, but the fruit is a bit thin, so drink asap. A good choice with a soft mild cheese like Brie.
