The “poor man’s vintage port,” this must be decanted to yield a clear deep garnet wine. Rich aromas of plums and wood, liquorice, chocolate and autumn forest. The palate is still fresh and fruity, tasting of strawberry jam with warm alcohol and an earthy background. Drinking very well now, but will improve for another year or two, then continue to be enjoyable for several more years.
Domaine de Pellehaut has been owned and managed by successive generations of the Béraut family for over 300 years. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat, Syrah, Malbec and Pinot Noir, averaging 27 years of age, go into this medium-bodied Côtes de Gascogne blend. Dusky black cherry, black plum and cassis along a raft of silky fine tannins to a juicy, plum swelled and peppery finish. Easy to drink and enjoy now; an ideal bistro red at an exceptional price or pour liberally around the barbecue.
Deep orange amber colour with complex aromas of sherried fruit, caramel, piquant spice and a whiff of herb. Rich, smooth, fruity sweetness through mid-palate with emphatically dry dark-chocolate bitterness on the finish.
Elegant and bright with plum and cedar, underlying ripe fruit and roses, fine, silky tannins and a wonderful balance of fruit, acid and restraint. Perfect with roasted pig’s head.
Pale yellow. Robust nose of gooseberry and passionfruit. Thankfully unoaked, which lets the tartly acidic flavours of grapefruit, lemon and lime shine through. Drink up.
Full ruby. Red and black berries, not yet integrated oak notes. Full-bodied; clearly more powerful than Magdelaine and with better aging potential, it shows less elegance and immediate drinking pleasure by comparison. Wait 7-8 years or more.
This is the 10th anniversary vintage for this iconic wine, now sold across the country and with a growing export market. Fermented entirely with indigenous yeasts, it unfolds beguiling floral, berry-fruit and honeyed Muscat scents. An array of fruit flavours on the palate show honeyed lemon, tangerine, subtle nuances of red berries and orchard fruit, backed by signature bright acidity and minerality. Finish is off-dry with a refreshingly gentle spritz.
