Showing aromatic grapefruit, pear and typically varietal grassy and green herbal scents, this medium-bodied, refreshingly balanced white is quite reminiscent of the Bordeaux style. Pair with shellfish and simple white fish dishes.
The 50 ha of the J. Hofstätter estate vineyards are ideally situated in South Tyrol, with vineyards along the steep slopes of both sides of the broad valley, and an impressive portfolio of red and white wines. They are one of the largest family estates in the region, now run by the 4th generation. Lagrein is indigenous to Alto Adige, and in their estate vineyards and this wine, was planted more than 30 years ago. Grapes are destemmed and crushed before 10 days’ fermentation in contact with the skins and solids, warming at the finish to extract additional dark florals and grip from Lagrein's leathery skins. Chewy tannins are ample but handled well and integrated, very smartly suited to the black plum, damson berry, forest floor that coats the soft, downy, low acid palate, with persistent nutmeg and 5 spicing to the cola finish. I expected, and craved, more freshness here.
Ruby colour. Nice black fruits and quite a bit of oak but not too much. The low acidity gives a mellow mouthfeel and a slightly jammy taste. A welcome touch of anise complements notes of liquorice. This is a “comfort” wine that will appeal to a wide audience.
Notes of peach, lemon, mineral, a floral accent and just starting to hint at petrol on the nose. It’s completely dry and vibrant on the palate with waves of fresh-cut citrus and peach flavours all lifted by electric acidity.
You won’t find a bigger Pinot Gris than this — unless you look for Zind‒Humbrecht. Golden straw in colour with a high-toned bouquet of peaches and honey. Full-bodied, rich and full on the palate — spicy, orange, peach and honey flavours with great length.
What an exciting nose of blackberry, cassis, raspberry jam, earth and nutmeg-cinnamon spice. It’s broad and flavourful in the mouth with plum, vanilla, jammy red fruits and currants, and all built on a sturdy frame of ripe tannins and good acidity. Lots of stuffing in this beauty red to age and improve for 5 to 7 years.
A gold-medal winner at the Ontario Wine Awards 2016. Deep straw in colour with a green tint; apple nose with a spicy oak note; medium- to full-bodied, dry, minerally, apple, orange and peach flavours. Beautifully balanced with lively acidity. Rich and full on the palate with great length.
