Aromas of black and blue fruit with some earthy and cedar hints precede a generous medium- to full-bodied palate that continues to open in the glass with cherry, cassis and blackberry notes supported by supple, elegant tannins.
Dense purple-black in colour with a spicy, cedary plum nose; full-bodied, dry, with a spicy plum and mocha-chocolate flavour. Firmly structured. A great barbecue wine.
Quinta Do Encontro has bended the indigenous variety Baga grape with Merlot here. You get a sturdy wine that’s dense purple in colour with a toasty, spicy nose of blackberries and a floral grace note. Those flavours are replicated satisfyingly on the palate. Serve it with hearty winter casseroles.
A blend of Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Mourvèdre, this is one hot wine for the price. It’s a dark ruby colour with rich cassis, currants, raspberry, pencil shavings, eucalypt, spice and smoky aromas on the nose. The fruits are rich and savoury in the mouth with lovely integrated spices, cedar and a subtle minty note on the finish. Serve with grilled meats.
Clear brass-yellow colour proclaims maturity, but the aroma is of a perfectly ripe McIntosh wearing banana cologne. Medium bodied with a pleasant lemony acidity, it’s a tropical fruit salad in your mouth. Perfectly mature now, it will drink well to 2016, maybe longer. Outstanding with a delicate fish.
This wine certainly has a lot of heart! Golden apple, pineapple, mango, peaches-and-cream corn, butter and vanilla flatter. Ripe, it is rich on the palate with fine acidity giving a lift on the long, spice-tinged finale.
Almonds and Mediterranean citrus hallmark this Venetian Pinot Grigio, one more complex than its contemporaries at this price point. A slick of lees cushions the whole, while wild herbs and bright acidity add interest through the spiced finish. One to seek out.
