The in-your-face aromatics signal its Marlborough origins, along with characteristic gooseberry, elderflower and lemon-and-lime zestiness on both nose and palate. The medium-body weight and rich texture, balanced by lip-smacking acidity, lead to a mineral finish. Delightful with a salad course.
This is a wine that benefits from time and not over chilling; let this relax and unknit in the glass some before drinking (liberally). The pixelated minerality will spill out of the glass, carried with subtle and alluring reductive notes, pine nuts, lemon thistle, meadow herbs, quince blossom and pear skin. Etna Bianco Superiore can only come from the village of Milo, embracing and facing the sea breezes from 700 m altitude. This is 40-year-old Carricante (with 10% other autochthonous grapes) that is harvested early and spends 10 months in stainless. The finish lingers with seawater freshness and salted citrus. Serious wine; best enjoyed at cellar temperature and with octopus, scallops or white fish now, or better yet, your cellar.
Delicate floral and fine lemon-citrus entry, with a splash of lime on mid-palate, brisk acidity and a light touch of petrol. Fine, ageworthy Riesling showing classic restraint, finishing just off-dry.
Dark ruby-purplish rim. Black berries, smoke, soft spices. Supple when it first hits your palate, its full and tight mid-palate has a dense core. The noticeable acidity will help it evolve favourably for many years to come.
Corposo is Colaneri’s take on a Ripasso wine. The blend is 65% Cabernet Franc, 25% Syrah and 10% Merlot. At first whiff, it is Cab Franc’s herbal nature that takes control, but soon thereafter, the plums, cocoa and cherry of the Merlot and the black pepper and cassis of the Syrah dominate. It is medium- to full-bodied, with a sweet core of berry fruit on the palate and a lengthy finish. Drink it over the next 4 to 5 years.
This is the first vintage for Pinot Noir in winemaker Sandra Oldfield’s top-tier collection. The wine spent one year in French oak barrels, followed by three years in bottle. What a gorgeous Pinot. The nose shows bramble, cherry-vanilla, raspberry bush, lavender, rosehips and pomegranate. It’s textured and layered on the palate with cherry-kirsch and anise flavours bolstered by oak and warm spices. It has length through the finish and is balanced nicely by racy acidity.
Enticing, with black cherry, plum and spice flavours, firm but supple tannins; rich yet fresh with a nice grippiness on the long finish. Definitely a meat wine.
