Sourced from the warm, sandy Black Sage Bench, this one offers fine red fruit with toasty, peppery, savoury and smoky aromas and raspberry, with peppery spice in the mouth. Smoothly textured with firm, but not overbearing tannins, it needs a little more time for youthful acidity to settle down.
The remote location of this small-town Ontario brewery hasn’t stopped its funky, sour farmhouse brews from selling out thanks to the droves of sour beer lovers ordering bottles online. The aroma is pleasantly perfumey, with whiffs of tangy orange blossom and floral chamomile tea. This farmhouse witbier drinks like a fuzzy peach, tart and fruity, with bright acidity and a flowery finale that lasts through the finish. Well worth a try, if you can get it. (The Seaforth, Ontario brewery ships its beers every week through its website.)
Clear medium-deep garnet. Medium-intensity nose of raspberry, earth and spice. Full-bodied and soft on the palate with smooth tannins supporting ripe fruit flavours: raspberry, blackberry and plum. Long finish. Will last another couple of years.
A blonde lager is the newest release from this Canadian alcohol-free brewery. It pours a clear, brassy gold with tiny bubbles dancing up the glass. Toasted bread and crackers balance hoppy notes of carnations and earth with touch of crisp apple. The malt character takes centre stage and the bitterness is soft and round. The fuller body gives it an edge over other beers in the category and like Partake’s other releases, this one is low calorie, too.
From one of the most prized vineyards of Mosel, and from a top vintage, comes this elegant Riesling. Not as powerful as some, the quality and length are still undeniable, with mineral, lime, peach, honey and petrol all present in the mix. Drink it now if you enjoy the fruit, or age for up to 12 years if you enjoy the mature qualities of a solid Mosel.
Lifted tropical and citrus notes precede a focused, varietally true palate with some herbaceous notes, gooseberry and grapefruit, and a keen mineral streak before a crisp close. A good match with Acadian caviar.
A great surprise from a cool vintage. Clocking in with a natural alcohol of 14.5%, this Gamay resembles a Cru Beaujolais with its plum, boysenberry, raspberry, strawberry and pepper personality. Suave tannins, fresh acid and a long aftertaste complete the package. Charcuterie was made for this wine.
