How to compost outdoors

Outdoor composting works well for people with large yards. There are two ways to compost outside – in a pile or compost bin. Piles should be reserved for leaves, grass clippings and other non-food materials (since there’s no way to keep animals away from the contents of your pile). Bins should be used when you plan to compost food scraps.

You should place your outdoor bin in an out-of-the-way location that won’t assault your nose or disturb the eye when you’re outside having a BBQ or just soaking in some sun. That being said, you’ll want to place the pile/bin somewhere convenient, since you’ll still need to be able to access it easily in the winter. If you’re still not sure where to put it, you can place it close to where you’ll be using the compost – so next to your garden or potting shed.
