DIY indoor compost bin

While you can buy indoor compost bins at most home-improvement stores, they can be expensive. Making your own isn’t too difficult and will save you a bit of money.

Materials

One large rubber or plastic garbage can with cover
One small rubber or plastic garbage can (that can fit inside the larger one)
Brick
Brown material (Wood chips, sawdust or soil)

Instructions

Drill four to six holes, each about half an inch in diameter, into the bottom and sides of the smaller can.

Place brick in the bottom of the larger can; add a layer of brown material around the rich (should reach the top of, but doesn’t need to cover, the brick)

Place small can in the large can on top of the brick. To the smaller can, add a layer of brown material, then a layer of fruit and veggie scraps, then a second layer of brown material. As you add materials throughout the week, ensure there is more brown material than food scraps.

Cover large can and keep covered when not adding scraps.

Fluff the compost weekly and ensure all materials remain moist. If things look dry, sprinkle water into the small can.
