How to compost indoors

Indoor composting is great for apartment dwellers or people with small lawns/homes. There are two ways to compost inside – the first is with a bin (see the next page for details on how to build your own, though you can easily buy one at a store).

The second is called vermicomposting. This method uses a special kind of earthworm, known as red wigglers, that can eat their weight in organic matter every day. They are perfect for small spaces like classrooms, apartments and tiny yards. Simply put a layer of dirt, newspaper or leaves in a covered container, add the earthworms and feed them daily with fruit and veggie scraps.
