Central Canada

Ontario

The “Take Home the Rest (THRT)” law mandated by the AGCO allows consumers to bring home unfinished bottles. It applies to both wines ordered from the restaurant or brought to a BYOW licensed establishment. There is one exception: unopened wines purchased from the restaurant. (So one hopes the restaurant won’t charge you for those unopened bottles.) You can read the full details in the AGCO’s guide “You and the Liquor Laws”, page 20.

Quebec

Quebec has allowed patrons to take home wine, resealed, since 2013. The amendment to Regulations (Section 28 and 29 of the Act Respecting Liquor Permits) was a bit of a rollercoaster for consumers and businesses alike, since it took almost two years to come into effect – it was proposed in early 2012, dropped when the regime changes from Liberal to PQ, and then re-surfaced in mid-2013 for consideration.

All that to say, you can bring home any unfinished bottle purchased at a restaurant or bar. Though most BYO establishments will allow you to take home wine you brought there as well.
