You’d Be a Fool to Pass These Up
Mama used to say things like: “a day late and a dollar short” – that’s the way I feel about missing April Fool’s Day (by yes, one day) … it’s like the sign in the bar that reads, “Free Beer Day Was Yesterday”.
I could have made up some funny wines and bizarre descriptors – though these days you can find those in some writers’ notes already (I ask: what does aardvark pelt smell like anyway?)
So since I can’t fool you with phony wines I can recommend a few I’ve tasted lately that you’d be a fool not to pick up the next time you’re at your local wine shop.
Bayten 2012 Chardonnay ($17.95) – South Africa
A delightful Chardonnay with plump apple, peach and pear fruit that adds vanilla and hints of butterscotch to a lovely spicy finish.
Carol Shelton 2010 monga Zin, Old Vines Zinfandel ($25.95) – California
I love Zin and this one hit all my high notes: cherry cola, vanilla and spice; came off funky at first but with a little time and it comes around.
Yalumba 2011 The Strapper GSM ($19.95) – Australia
This Grenache / Shiraz / Mourvedre has got the goods for a summer BBQ; a well-balanced fruit, herbal and spice mix perfect accompaniment for grilled steak.
