Wonder Drink Kombucha #TastetheGoodness

Wonder Drink Kombucha

Fermented food and drink consumption has been popular, even more since gut health became a “thing”. The downside to fermented things (for many) is, of course, the flavour – not everyone likes sour and tart … unless it’s alcoholic. Enter Wonder Drink, a flavoured Kombucha beverage that is actually kind of tasty.

Wonder Drink comes in three flavours – Apple Mint, Tropical Mango and Ginger Peach – sold in slim, 355 ml cans. Vegan, gluten-free, USDA Organic and non-GMO, Wonder Drink ticks all the boxes when it comes to marketing buzz words (and what consumers are focussed on these days), and it only has 10 grams of sugar per can. Of course, none of this helps if the taste isn’t there. SO, I did a tasting to see if it really is a wonder drink.

Apple Mint

On first sniff, there’s apple cider with notes of peppermint – a very fresh smelling beverage. There’s a strong mint flavour at first – not toothpaste or peppermint mint, we’re talking more the vegetal, mint-leaf flavour… like you’re chewing on a literal mint leaf. That strong mint flavour overpowers through the middle until the bubbles come in and scrub the palate with soft, subtle apple. Then, on the finish, there’s a melange if mint-leaf and apple that carries until the last second when a fermented tang hits. In this one, other than that hit at the very end, you can hardly tell this is a Kombucha drink.

Tropical Mango

I would have named this Tropical Pineapple… or maybe just Pineapple. That’s the smell and flavour that over powers nearly all else in this can. It took a few tastes to find the other notes – there’s mango in the middle of the palate, lifted by fast, prickly, persistent bubbles. It kind of reminds me of a Snapple tropical punch – loads of pineapple supported by some other indistinguishable tropical fruit, leaving you feeling refreshed and hydrated. A nice summer drink, really. Except for that sharp, dry aftertaste.

Ginger Peach

The nose has ginger and fruit, with ginger ruling; it actually made me think of Christmas, specifically the musty red candles that we all pull out of storage once a year. I think they’re supposed to smell like cinnamon? Anyway, the nose it holiday-esque. Tangy on first sip, there’s lots of, you guessed it, ginger supported by citrus and stone fruit notes. The tangy note isn’t “off” or “unpleasant” but leaves a dry, kind of fermented fruit aftertaste in the mouth. Lingers. Bubbles are softer/bigger than the Tropical Mango; less tickle in the nose/back of the throat. Reminds me of a ginger ale and orange juice, if I’m being honest, but one made with like, orange drink instead of fresh OJ.

My final verdict is… it’s not bad. Wonder Drink is definitely worth a try – my favourite was Ginger Peach, and I would definitely drink that again, more than once. Next time I have a can, I will try out the Wonder Drink cocktail Ginger Peach Daiquiri.
