Bee’s Wrap Sustainable Food Storage – Assorted set of 3

Plastic and cling wrap are staples in every kitchen – I doubt you could find a single kitchen in Canada or the US that doesn’t have some form of wrap available for preserving food. There are  downsides to these products: high waste production, use of non-renewable resources to create the wrap, the fact that cling wrap more often clings to itself, your hands or other surfaces rather than the food you’re trying to wrap.

Sarah Kaeck created Bee’s Wrap in 2012 in order to counter those downsides while eliminating plastics in their kitchen in favour of a healthier, more sustainable way to store food. Bee’s Wrap is a washable, reusable, compostable alternative to plastic wrap made from organic cotton, beeswax, organic jojoba oil and tree resin. This malleable food wrap can be used as many times as need for sandwiches, cheese, produce and to cover containers – though you shouldn’t use it for meat.

The assorted pack comes with three sheets – small 7” x 8”, medium 10” x 11” and large 13” x 14”. The wrap itself is stiff at first – it becomes more flexible as you handle it – and tacky (not quite enough to be sticky). It smells like honey that’s been stored in cardboard, which makes sense, because it is. The cardboard-y scent goes away after a time, especially if you rinse it in cold water.

Using the wrap was a lot easier than trying to wrestle with cling wrap. I tested the sheets out on cheese – old Cheddar and Gouda. It didn’t cling to the food itself, but once I’d tightly wrapped the cheese, I pressed my hands onto the edges of the sheet to heat it up, making the sheet stick to itself. It kept my cheese in perfect condition for well over a week, and was easy to unwrap and rewrap when I needed it.

The honey smell doesn’t dissipate though; it is quite strong and can be a bit off-putting if you’re not in the mood for that sweet scent. Luckily, the smell doesn’t linger on your food (or at least, it didn’t linger on my cheese) and won’t affect the taste.

The tacky surface of the Bee’s Wrap was also a bit unnerving. It picked up every bit of dust and dirt that it could. But cleaning the wrap is easy – so easy, I thought maybe I’d done it wrong. Just run it under cold water, wipe it down with a bit of gentle soap and hang to dry. It will be as good as new and ready for the next block of cheese.
