The Aromatherapy Beauty Guide: Using the Science of Carrier & Essential Oils to Create Natural Personal Care Products

By / Life / November 20th, 2017 / 5

Aromatherapy uses plant materials and aromatic plant oils, like essential oils, to improve psychological or physical well being. What may surprise some people is that there is a science behind it – it works hand in hand with medical and conventional treatments (so it’s not a replacement for seeing a doctor).

Danielle Sade BSc, CAHP has over 30 years of experience teaching and prating complementary health. Her passion for sharing the sound, scientific basis of aromatherapy and recipes for creating natural botanical creams and lotions inspired her to write The Aromatherapy Beauty Guide, published by Robert Rose publishing.

In the guide, Sade provides all of the information one would need to not only make natural beauty products but also understand why they work. All of this information is split into four sections: the foundation, including the anatomy of skin, the mind-body connection, nature of skin and, of course, the chemistry of essential oils; the ingredients of great skin, like the raw ingredients and the role of carrier oils; essentials oils, 35 different oils are described in detail; and finally, the recipes for natural products.

The 370 pages are beautifully designed with soft colours that are easy on the eyes. Well-written, it does tend to read a bit like a textbook, which sort of is. There is a ton of knowledge needed to make your own skincare products – pH balance, skin type, ingredient composition and more. Sade does a great job ensuring that all the salient information is there in a way that isn’t school-science-textbook dry.

It may be difficult to find the ingredients or the tools, but luckily once you do, most of the recipes have less than five steps and just a few ingredients. The recipes include Basic creams, facial cleansers, tones, moisturizers, masks, bath products and more.

Overall, it is clear, easy-to-follow and very informative. My only nitpick is that there isn’t a more extensive table of contents – specifically for the essential oils section.
