This Clare Cabernet is from this historic St. Andrews property, first planted in 1892. Rich and full, with roasted coffee bedding, this is a dense, thick and potent red, with medicinal cherry leading and tobacco, cassis and cedar filling out the rest of the ample 14.5 (minimal) fleshy frame. Tannins are wood-strident and opaque at this youthful stage, enough to hold up the very ripe fruit. The finish burns with wooden alcohol, requiring rich and fatty ribs to counter now or, better yet, time in the cellar to lessen the impact.
