Made from 25-year-old vines, this Syrah is still a tad closed but features plum, raspberry and cranberry flavours which encapsulate black pepper, cocoa, incense, oregano and vanilla notes. Very good length, fine acid and approachable.
A traditional style of Rosso with all its charm and a slight rustic edge that touches the soul. Vibrant notes of cherry, cinnamon and licorice with bright acid and dusty tannins. Enjoyed it with pizza Margherita—it was the perfect Monday.
When 3rd generation Nik Weis took over St Urbans-Hof in 1997, he steered the venerable Mosel site sustainable. Organic fertilizers, wild ferment, no additives are all employed to showcase the true nature of this steep slope of graveled slate. A gentle press and fermentation in stainless at cool cellar temperatures captured the delicacy and light spritz of the grape, before aging in traditional 1000 L fuder for a few months. So much ginger here – leading off a rich and full Kabinett Riesling. Elderflower, lilies, apricot, honeyed pear, ginger ale and river rock, and a flush of perfumed tangerine and mandarin. This lingers with rosewater and fine jasmine spicing and a gentle smoked stone.
From the ripe and lush aromas on the nose, I was expecting a flabby palate. To the contrary! Like an elegant ballerina, the wine components are perfectly balanced. Notes of nectarine, lemon, hazelnut and butter are just slightly overshadowed by the vanilla flavours but it is just a matter of a year or two until the aromas are in harmony. Impressive mouth-watering acidity despite the hot vintage. Magnificent. Put it in your cellar for 4-6 years.
Undergoes a secondary fermentation in the bottle (bottle-conditioned) so expect a hazy appearance. Head is foamy and persistent with soft, slightly yeasty and citrusy aromas. Generously full flavours reveal fruity and nutty character with an initial touch of sweetness, finishing with appetizingly dry bitterness.
Flatrock has perfected this aromatic blend of Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay. There is plenty going on here with lime, lemon, orchard fruits and a pinch of spice on the nose. It’s slightly off-dry and the grapefruit and ginger spice shine on the palate with pear and apple notes chiming in. Lovely sipping wine.
Dark ruby. Deep nose with black fruits notes buried under heavy oak. Full bodied, thick texture and chewy tannins. Balsamic notes start to appear in the mid-palate and continue into the long finish. Hold 5 years and drink over the next 5.
