Such great focus and balance between elegance, penetrating flavours and underlying structure with loads of juicy black cherry and plum, liquorice and spice, plush texture, firm backbone, slightly chalky and a deliciously long and lingering fresh and lively finish. Hard to stop drinking and an incredibly versatile food wine.
Polished, newer style Ripasso showing less typical raisiny dried fruit, but more refined pure black cherry intensity. Smoothly textured, harmoniously integrated and well balanced throughout with a dusting of fine spice on the finish.
Intense aromas of black fruit over meaty and gamey hints before a palate of dark berries. Very fruit-driven and varietally correct, with definite stony notes wrapped in plush and approachable tannins, before a juicy middle and black peppery ending. Made in a custom concrete tank produced with local sand and gravel.
Oaky, but not over the top, as the aromas of vanilla, hazelnut and spice mesh with green apple, Bosc pear and white peach. Medium-plus body; there is excellent length with a creamy/acidic interplay making for a delicious pairing with lobster and drawn butter.
Loaded with aromas and flavours of honey, raisins and spice; great concentration of flavours and balance between sweetness and acidity possessing an incredibly fresh finish. Ideal with semi-aged pecorino drilled with honey and sprinkled with finely ground coffee.
From a single vineyard with predominantly clay soils on the Naramata Bench. Vibrant black berry notes up front lead to a generous mouthfeel wrapped in approachable tannins, defined by fresh black cherry and mulberry with spicy and smoky hints, underpinned by a pleasing earthy, savoury edge, with a touch of spice throughout the lengthy finish. Excellent value.
I don’t think you’ll find a To Kalon wine for less money than the Oakville from Mondavi. It’s a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot and 1% Malbec from newer To Kalon plantings. The 2010 vintage is slightly cooler, giving this wine a bit more finesse on the palate. The nose shows classic black fruits of cassis and blackberries with cherry fruit, mocha, peppery spices, liquorice and tar notes. There is a raciness on the palate from higher acids, but the fruits are ripe and bold with integrated spice, oak and tannic structure.
