Up-front tropical aromas precede a well-structured palate with quince, lemon and grapefruit notes and generous mouthfeel, underpinned by a keen mineral streak with good length and acidity.
Clear, deep plum red. Medium nose of raspberry, maple syrup, vanilla and raisins. Prune, cherry and woody flavours with quite high alcohol and acidity and soft tannins. Long finish. Drink up.
When handled properly (with care, like this) Dao is a fantastic region for fresh, bright reds and whites made from indigenous varieties, in this case, Tinta Roriz, Alfrocheiro Preto and Touriga Nacional. Herbal raspberries, black cherry, perfumed rock roses, with an undercarriage of pitch and black pepper. Grippy and tight, sticky youthful tannins reflect a short six month stint in oak and three months aging before release.
Light straw in colour with a green tint; leesy apple and pineapple nose with a touch of oak; full in the mouth, rich and spicy with pineapple and orange flavours and a fine spine of acidity that carries the flavour. Good value.
Whole bunch pressed and cold fermented, with 40% aged in new and neutral French oak. Aromas of orchard fruit precede a well textured and rounded palate, with extra weight from the time in oak, accentuated by Macintosh apple and pear notes, with well-balanced acidity and a lengthy, slightly creamy finish.
This is a tight, lean Riesling that opens up to a dynamic and earthy nose of grapefruit, reductive minerals and a deep dive on salinity; like an ocean breeze, very complex. It has firm acidity, a tart range of citrus fruit, lanolin, fuzzy peach and subtle minerality.
Craft spirits are hot these days, but consider the “original” Canadian craft spirt: Newfoundland Screech Rum. Long before any Canadian liquor board was (for better or worse) created, Newfoundland salt fish was being traded for West Indian rum. I can tell you which party got the better deal. Redolent with vanilla pod, orange zest, sultana and molasses, it’s smooth, rich and spicy, with caramel, toffee, vanilla and citrus notes. Maybe Canada could annex Jamaica.
