Aromatics show plenty of breed with fine developed vinosity and complex oaky, spicy and herbal overtones. Seductive well-integrated red fruit and smooth chocolate countered by a firm tannic touch on the finish.
Ann Sperling is an award-winning vintner who makes wine at Southbrook in Niagara and at her family farm in BC’s Okanagan Valley. Sperling Gewürztraminer 2013 from BC has a nose of lychees, rose petal and grapefruit notes. The wine is medium-bodied, off-dry with orange, peach and rose water flavours. It works well with Asian dishes, light curries or as an apéritif.
Alluring complexity from an aromatic mélange of citrus salad, floral flecks, herbal tinges and wet stone. Crunchy apple bursts on the tangy palate, punctuated by grapefruit, mandarin orange and passion fruit. Long, rich finish with toasty notes. Try fish tacos with this Sauv Blanc/Sem (75%, 25%) blend.
Mascot’s brewmaster Siobhan McPherson (Mill Street, Amsterdam, Burdock) is boss, as is evident in her latest sour ale. Fermented with souring yogurt, this kettle sour’s lactic funk is balanced by refreshing cucumber, tart pineapple and a tingle of ginger on the finish.
A sense of elegance on the nose with notes of creamy pear, apple, melon, butter and vanilla cream. This is a comforting Chard on the palate with a creamy texture that highlights rich poached pear, lovely oak spices and lively acidity to keep it all balanced.
Purplish. Attractive, typical “Pinot Noir” nose of small red fruits and spicy notes. Quite intense and a bit sauvage. Nice fruity attack, firm middle palate and slightly bitter finish of very good length. Drink over the next 3 to 4 years.
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), Merlot, (23%), Cabernet Franc (22%), Malbec (10%) and Petit Verdot (5%), sourced from home and other Similkameen vineyards. Forward notes of black fruit with floral hints and graphite precede an entry of luscious layers of mulberry, damson and blackberry. Juicy acidity with approachable and seamless tannins, impressively integrated with hallmark minerality through the finish. Superb value.
