Bone dry with bright acid and explosive notes of white grapefruit, key lime pie and white peaches that awake the taste buds. Simple with a moderate finish but so thirst quenching. A great partner when you are ordering sushi to go.
Since 1985, this yeoman has been many people’s introduction to Australian wine—or even wine in general. Medium-deep yellow, with a nose of pineapple and tropical fruits topped with a touch of oak. Light-bodied and light-flavoured, no doubt for the broadest possible appeal, it is easy to quaff, jam-packed with stone fruit and orange flavours, with a touch of lemony acidity. It was nice company for duck chowder, the oak in the wine complementing the smoky bacon in the chowder. Drink now.
Refreshing with bright acid and expressive yet not over the top. Notes of guava, lime, grapefruit and lemon with a touch of grass. Light body and pure with a medium finish. Shines when enjoyed with grilled asparagus and poached eggs lightly sprinkled with fresh Parmesan.
Clear medium-deep yellow. Medium-intensity nose of pineapple, lemon, a bit of melon. Light-bodied with peach flavours, but bright acidity and a bit of bitter minerality give the wine structure and avoid fruit-bomb territory. Drink up.
Clear medium yellow. Oak prominent on the nose with lots of vanilla and caramel over orange and apple aromas. Full-bodied and smooth on the palate, slightly sweetish and tasting of stone fruit and melon. The oak is obvious but the ample fruit prevents it from being overwhelming. Drink up.
Generous flavours of wild strawberries and raspberries are lifted by pretty violet notes. Nice silky texture with soft tannins and well-integrated 13.5% abv. A great example of the style of Grenache coming out of McLaren Vale: un-oaked, pure and showing the delicate style of Grenache. Best if served slightly chilled. Pulled-pork sandwich, hello!
My numerous trips to Australia in the last five years have convinced me that the country produces some of the best Chardonnay in the world and, often, at an appealing price. This wine from the talented Mac Forbes makes a strong case for it. Full body with fresh acid and compact structure with an enjoyable reductive touch. Appealing notes of lemon and lime zest are in symbiosis with the creamy texture. Crab, please!
