5 Minute Mav: Jerry Jerrard

By / Mavericks / September 26th, 2013 / 4

Founded by Jerry Jerrard aka The Bee Guy, Kawartha Lakes Honey is the honey you want to be feasting on. Forget spreading it on bread or drizzling some over yogurt. Just grab the spoon and dig in. Once a hobbyist, Jerry learned as much as he could about beekeeping then jumped right in to do it full-time. With 500 hives spread around the Kawartha Lakes region of Ontario, Jerry can harvest honey from bees who pollinate a large variety of flowers.

What’s the best experience you’ve ever had with your bees?
There is no “best” experience … just being able to work with these amazing insects everyday is a great experience. I love what I do because I’m one of those odd guys who would rather work with a million stinging insects than human beings

What’s your favourite colour?

The really deep blue sky that I’ve only ever seen against the backdrop of a snow covered ski hill on a sunny winter day.

Who’s your real life hero?

My hero is anybody who advocates for the wellbeing of our environment. The fight against the misguided use of pesticides and genetically modified crops is a huge issue in the beekeeping industry today.  We are losing millions of our bees and other species to these contaminants.  To me, a hero is anybody who takes up the cause to protect our planet and our food supply for future generations. David Suzuki comes to mind.

What’s your idea of happiness?

In no particular order: A big bucket of Kawartha Dairy ice-cream; a wonderful red wine; spending time with my granddaughter; and the happy buzz of healthy bees.

What’s your favourite book?

The Education of Oversoul Seven by Jane Roberts.
