Make a Rustic Centrepiece

By / Magazine / April 15th, 2010 / 1

At this time of the year when the season of spring can throw anything at us from hot summer days to winter storms, it’s really nice to look at a tabletop centrepiece that celebrates the outdoors. With a few simple “ingredients”, this project can make a unique holder for fruit or flowers. I made a version of it years ago, and it still makes a useful and pretty addition to my décor.

What You Need:

3 branches, about 41 centimetres long and about 3 centimetres in diameter

6 nails

1 metre of raffia

31 centimetres square of wire mesh

Hammer, wire cutter and pliers

Directions:

1. Cross two of the branches to form an X; nail them together through the centre. Hold the X upright and place the third branch against it. Make sure the branches form a level tripod shape before nailing the third branch to the first two.

2. Push the wire mesh down into the centre of the basket-shaped branches. Use the wire cutters to trim the mesh to fit neatly inside the centrepiece. Once you’ve placed fruit or flowers into the centrepiece, you don’t want the mesh to be visible.

3. Wind the raffia around the junction of the branches to cover the nails.

4. Line the basket with leaf clippings, flowers and fruit.
