Cook Up Some Confidence in the Kitchen

Registered dietitians with Dairy Farmers of Canada are urging parents to get their kids into the kitchen to learn cooking skills. Involving kids in cooking now will not only save parents time during the busy school year, but also give children an important set of skills they can apply their entire life. To help parents and kids get a head start, Dairy Farmers of Canada is bringing a mobile kitchen to family festivals across Ontario, where families can learn cooking skills and prepare a delicious dish together.

“When you cook with your kids, you are setting them up for a healthier future,” says Heidi Boyd, registered dietitian with Dairy Farmers of Canada. “The majority of Ontario families don’t cook together, yet when children are welcomed into the kitchen, research shows they are more likely to try new foods, eat better and build the confidence they need to prepare healthy meals and snacks for themselves now and when they are older.”

The mobile kitchen offers various stations where kids can practice their cooking skills under the guidance of trained staff and parents. Families can then prepare a meal using their new skills. Information with tips and tricks to help parents cook with their kids year-round will also be available at the kitchen.

“Teaching kids cooking skills now will also help free up time in the fall when kids can begin to take on more responsibility with meal preparation,” says Heidi. “You will be amazed at what your children are capable of doing in the kitchen with a little support from you. Also, cooking with your kids gives you extra one-on-one time, which can be so fleeting during the school year.”

The mobile kitchen will be travelling to the following family events throughout Ontario in August and September:

Barrie Kempenfest: August 2-5, 2013

Hamilton Festival of Friends: August 9-11, 2013

Cornwall Waterfest: August 17-18, 2013

Sudbury Summerfest: August 22-25, 2013

Toronto Taste of the Kingsway: September 6-8, 2013
