5 Reasons Carpets are Not Evil

By / Food / August 6th, 2013 / 1

Many believe that carpets passé – that hardwood floors are the way to go. But let me tell you – carpets can be your best friend, and here are five reasons why.

Sound

In homes with only hardwood floors, sound echos. You’ll hear each bump everywhere in the house. Carpets absorb sound. The best place to have carpet – be it broadloom (wall-to-wall) or an area rug – is in your bedroom.

Comfort

There is no other type of flooring that makes the feet happier than carpet. The winter months are cold – tile and hardwood will retain the chill all day. Carpets provide a layer between your feet and the cold flooring. They also cushion the feet – a luxurious feeling after a hard day of work.

Décor

Chosen correctly, carpets – especially area rugs – add depth. Broadloom carpets should be kept a neutral colour that complements the walls. Area rugs however could incorporate all of your room’s accent colours in a strong pattern. This unifies a room and adds another dimension to the décor.

Room Division

Open concept is popular in modern homes but a challenge for interior design – area rugs help by signalling a change in “room”. For joint living room/dining rooms, place a rug in the center of the sofa set and another under the dining room table. This clear visual indicator adds stability to larger spaces.

VOCs

Carpets first lost popularity in part due to Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). There are harmful emissions that some products emit as they age. Nowadays, carpets have been manufactured to prevent harmful VOCs. If you’re worried, look for natural fibers like wool, which are available at a slightly higher cost.
