Osmo+ by DJI

Back in August 2016, DJI released their second generation OSMO, a camera and gimbal (pivoted support with rotation on a single axis) that is operated by your iPhone. The OSMO+ is a handheld gimbal with integrated zoom camera that promises professional-grade video.

And it delivers.

The OSMO+ features 7x zoom consisting of a unique combination of 3.5x optical and 2x digital lossless zoom that allows future movie makers to film their subject crystal clear no matter the zoom setting. However, it’s the OSMO+’s advanced stabilization that really shines. Building on the advanced stabilization technology introduced with the OSMO, the OSMO+ keeps the camera flat while filming. This allows you to live stream your event or shoot your first film without having to set up a convoluted tripod system.

For someone with little to no video experience, that’s about as good as it gets. But for the more experience videographers, there are quite a few extra features to play with on the OSMO+. Motion time lapse is automated; you mark where you want the movement to start and end, then tap ‘start’ to create. Detailed panorama ensures your panoramic are as crystal clear as any standard photo, and you can use your iPhone to create it. Long exposure keeps the camera steady for crisp, sharp freehand capture long exposures. Again, no tripod required! Though you can use one if you want that extra support. Moving Selfies take advantage of the OSMO+’s 0.5 meter focal distance so you will be in focus the entire time you’re filming your selfie.

The OSMO+ comes with the microSD card, carrying case, camera, mobile device holder, wrist strap, battery charging system and external microphone. This makes it ready to use right out of the box. The gimbal and camera connect to your device via Wi-Fi connectivity, which causes some delay in camera feed at startup but otherwise works as well as the standard corded connection.

You operate the OSMO+ through the DJI Go app. It is simple, easy to us and comes with professional-grade features. One that stands out is the ability to tap-and-hold on a subject. The camera then follows the person or object automatically as it moves about, so you won’t have to struggle with the joystick and can ensure perfect coverage. That being said, manual control is available via the joystick, or you can use the trigger system. A single button on the handheld part of the OSMO+ activates different movements when pressed: holding it down is lock mode; double tap centers the camera; and three taps turns on selfie mode.

This powerful camera and gimbal system shoots crisp 4K/30fps video and 1080p/100fps slow motion video. It has enhanced sound capture and gives you the option to capture 12 megapixel stills in Adobe DNG RAW for later editing. Finally, it comes with a variety of accessories, so you can use it in any situation.

A fun camera that will take your videos up a notch. It’s just a bit on the pricey side.
