New Mac Candle

The new mac smell is a distinct aroma that wafts up out of the box and grabs hold of your olfactory senses. It’s like the new car smell everyone loves. Like the new car smell, Apple lovers around the world wish that new mac scent didn’t have to fade.

Down at Twelve South, Andrew Green decided it was time for a scented candle keeps the New Mac smell lingering around forever (or rather, for up to 55 hours).

“The idea happened earlier this year in anticipation of the iPhone 7 launch,” he writes. “I thought, ‘wouldn’t it be fun to capture the smell of opening a new Apple device and make it into a candle?’. Of course it was imperative to us that the end scent was as close to accurate as possible but also a pleasant scent to have around your home or office.”

Green’s recipe for New Mac includes mint, peach, basil, lavender, mandarin and sage – five aromas selected from the hundreds of scents presented to him by the Candlefish shop team. The 100% soy wax is hand-poured in Charleston, SC.

The candle has a pleasant, almost floral scent (that’s probably the lavender). In a way, the smell does actually remind me of new plastic with a hint of metal and glass; but it also, every other whiff or so, calls to mind expensive soap (you know, the good quality stuff). While I personally wouldn’t connect the scent with a brand new Apple product, I’m in no way an expert – it’s been awhile since I had a new Apple product!

Instead, I’ll point you in the direction of the experts in new-Mac-sniffing: Mac Stadium. These are the experts Twelve South had test out the accuracy of their interpretation of what Apple products smell like out of the box. According to them, “On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d give it an accuracy score of 9.”
