National Geographic Photo Ark at Liquidity Wines

Liquidity wines frequently showcases art in their bistro and tasting room. The gallery extends out into their vineyards as well, installations that complement the art featured inside. Owner Ian MacDonald usually selects their exhibits. This summer, they are the first Canadian stop for the National Geographic Photo Ark.

The National Geographic Photo Ark isa compelling series of photographic portraits that capture the Earth’s diverse species. It is a multi-platform visual documentation of every species in the world’s zoos and other wildlife sanctuaries. Joel Sartore, a National Geographic photographer for over 25 years who has risked life and limb to photograph the world, founded the Photo Ark.

“These days my focus is on the Photo Ark, the world’s largest collection of animal studio portraits,” says Sartore. “The goal of the Photo Ark is simple: show what’s at stake, and get people to care – while there is still time.”

According to Sartore’s website, 8485 species were photographed for the Photo Ark, and he’s not done; the goal is to document 12,000 species. The completed National Geographic Photo Ark will be the largest archive of studio-quality images, if it isn’t already.

Ultimately, they hope to raise awareness about endangered species. Many of the animals featured face growing threats to their survival.

The Photo Ark is touring the world. It started in Jackson, Wyoming at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in June 2017. From there, it appeared in Poland, The Netherlands, South Korea, Italy, Portugal, California and Connecticut. Now it’s visiting Canada. On June 23, Liquidity Wines opened their doors to this noble cause. They will be home to the exhibit until September 3, 2018.

“Liquidity is proud to have been chosen as the first Canadian stop for the National Geographic Photo Ark exhibition,” said Macdonald. “National Geographic is such an iconic global brand, and we are thrilled to be working with them on this inspirational show.”

If you’re in the area, tour the light-filled tasting room at Liquidity to admire Photo Ark’s compelling portraits. Organized by the National Geographic Society, the winery’s exhibition features over 50 photographs, as well as informational and educational content.

If you’re not in the area, you can browse Sartore’s website or National Geographic’s official Photo Ark webpage to see what you’re missing.
