Muskoka Brewery Salty Caramel Truffle

Craft brewers find inspiration in the world of food and drink. They look at the way a plated meal plays on the palate and try to find the ingredients that will complement or replicate any given dish. Muskaka Brewery’s team took that concept one step further.

“At Muskoka Brewery, we’re always looking ahead and experimenting with new flavours and styles,” says brewery president Todd Lewin. Their latest experiment – Salty Caramel Truffle – is a collaboration with Ontario’s Kawartha Dairy. It is, in fact, an ice cream inspired brew.

“It’s always a bonus when we get to venture off the beaten path and innovate with a homegrown brand like Kawartha Dairy, whose roots are also in cottage country,” says Lewin. “We’re excited to kick off 2018 with this partnership and the first beer of its kind – both for Muskoka Brewery and Canadians.”

This is the first beer in Canada based on an ice cream flavour, which in itself is pretty amazing. The Salty Caramel Truffle is also Muskoka Brewery’s first bock-style beer. Bock refers to a bottom-fermented lager with malt flavours and a soft caramel backbone that is produced in the winter and served up in the spring. To get the unique creaminess in this beer, they combine sweet and salty with a few hops and a touch of yeast; the chocolate notes come from roasted malts.

I got to taste this new creation. It does taste a bit like caramel ice cream, which was a nice surprise. Creamy with subtle caramel, minimal hoppy flavours and lovely dark baker’s chocolate notes, it is a very smooth beer that would make a lovely post-dinner sipper with friends.

So head to the nearest LCBO to grab a can (or 12) of Salty Caramel Truffle for yourself. It’s only available for a limited time, so don’t wait too long.
