Goodfood Basket Meal Subscription

Goodfood is a meal kit subscription service that delivers (almost) everything you need to make a delicious and healthy meal. They deliver fresh ingredients and step by step instructions to your door every week. As someone who dislikes grocery shopping (grocery stores are so big, confusing and kind of sad), having groceries delivered in neatly organized packets (complete with labels!) is heavenly.

Delivery is done during the day – if you can’t be there because you have to be at work, the delivery person will leave the package at your door. You don’t have to stress about your ingredients going bad either; the box your food comes in is insulated and packed to keep everything fresh for up to 24 to 48 hours. I didn’t test that, however, when I received my box because I was too excited to try out the first recipe.

My box came with three recipes. Each recipe was designed to feed two people (spoiler alert: we had leftovers). Inside the box were three bags – one for each recipe – containing most of the ingredients for that recipe. The meats were packed in the bottom with the ice packs, I assume separated for health safety reasons.

All the veggies were very crisp and fresh; they stayed that way in their packaging after they’d been in the fridge as well. Beef had never been frozen (according to the package) and is all natural and 100% Canadian. Cod was… cod-like.

The entire box, and its non-edible contents, is recyclable, which I really like. Too often I receive packages with materials I can’t recycle, so this is a nice change of pace. In fact, I plan on using all the containers spreads and liquids came in for lunches in the future (they’re the perfect size for salad dressing).

Overall, I found the recipes easy to make (minus one major slip up). Reviewing this box made me try new things both in the kitchen and on my plate. And I wasn’t disappointed. So I’d say the box did what they said it would:

“We’ve designed the experience to teach you fun new recipes, discover new ingredients (some can be hard to find!), save prep time and also reduce unnecessary waste.”

I’ve tried to record my experience with each of the three recipes; you can read them in Testing the Goodfood Basket.
