From Crook to Cook by Snoop Dogg

From Crook to Cook is a cookbook written by none other than Snoop Dogg. The D-O-Double-G got into the food industry back in 2008 when he appeared on Martha Stewart’s show. He now works his culinary magic on VH1’s Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party.

Aside from the obvious draw – that From Crook to Cook is his book – this is a marvel to behold. It’s combination of styles – classic cover, 70s-themed designs, gothic/gangster font – are… confusing, but not in an unpleasant way. Once your eyes adjust to some of the brighter colours, the visuals become part of the experience. Which is, overall, entertaining… and awesome.

The 192-page hardcover book contains a sweet foreword by Martha Stewart. Snoop Dogg taught her “new lingo and cultural references” and surprised her “with his unique cooking techniques and recipes.” Then, there’s an introduction from Snoop Dogg; he talks about how he’s had so many culinary experiences because he has had to travel the world for work. He also gives us a sneak peek into his kitchen, pantry and fridge.

There are six chapters – breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, drinks and parties. Each section has a stylistic change of sorts. The first four each have a different soft background colour. Drinks changes it up to be a bit classier/”upscale hotel bar” in appearance. And the party section goes full-colour onslaught.

The party section has a party-specific menu – thanksgiving, game day and each party. These menus come with the recipes AND a playlist for you to jam to while you cook and/or party.

The recipes aren’t anything new. Mac and Cheese, salad, smoothie, Chicken and Waffles, cinnamon rolls, cookies – all things we’ve seen before. But, the Snoop-Dogg spin is well worth a look. He makes cooking sound fun. Cooking through Snoop’s lens seems to make everything that much more delicious. The little stories that appear at the beginning of each recipe are worth reading, if only to peek into a celeb’s life.

Plus, you get to experience the world through his unique perspective, and find out a little bit more about this industry-changing super star.
