Winterizing your Deck or Patio

By / Food / November 15th, 2013 / 2

We love our summers, as short-lived as they may be. Soaking up all that summer sunshine on our decks and patios is of utmost importance. We invest in outdoor furniture, bbqs, umbrellas, awnings, beautiful planters and the deck itself. But, like most good things, summer must end and we must protect those investments from the harsh reality of winter weather.

Deck

Pressure wash the deck before the below zero weather hits. Check for any damage or wear and make any necessary repairs. Remember, damage will only become worse over the winter months – fixing something now may save you both time and money.

BBQ

Clean your grill and cover it with a winter or heavy-duty BBQ cover if you plan to leave it outdoors.

Outdoor furniture

Clean your outdoor cushions with soapy water; rinse and let them dry in the sun before storing them for the winter. Slip covers should be washed according to manufacturer’s recommendations. Use mild, soapy water to clean any plastic, resin or metal furniture before storing. If you’re out of storage room, wrap your furniture in an outdoor tarp to protect it from the elements. Wood furniture should be cleaned and lightly oiled before storing.

Umbrellas and Awnings

Again, lightly scrub with soapy water and rinse with the garden house. Open umbrellas and awning s and let dry for at least 2 days before storing. If they are not completely dry you will get a moldy surprise next spring!

Planters, Pots and Garden Decor

Empty and rinse planters, pots and garden décor. Store them indoors, especially if they are ceramic. Bring any tropical plants indoors for the winter. Don’t forget to drain your hoses and store them before the cold weather sets in.
