What are some novel ways of using my favourite condiments?

Well, I suppose the first thing to consider is which condiments are cluttering up your fridge right now. Salsas, tobasco, grainy mustard — these lend themselves well to just about anything. Use your imagination. Or do a quick internet search, and you’ll get a sense of the vast amount of possibilities these particular flavour boosters offer.

There are, however, other condiments that might languish in your fridge. Take ketchup, for instance. It’s great for topping a burger or hot dog. Some people love to dip breaded chicken fingers or grilled cheese sandwiches into it. What about those jars of sweet pickle relish? Adding relish to salad dressings, especially for potato or pasta salads, is a great idea. Add a few drops of tobasco or sriracha sauce for extra kick. Just because particular condiments are marketed to pair with particular foods, it doesn’t mean you have to settle with that. Here are a few ideas to get you started. After that, try experimenting on your own. Pair sweet and spicy or sour and sweet. I bet you’ll invent a few new great recipes.

Short-Cut Chili Con Carne  – Just add 4 Tablespoons of ketchup to the recipe for a hint of sweetness.
Quick and Easy BBQ Sauce – Stir together sweet pickle relish and your favourite chili sauce until it tastes best to you. Brush on barbecued meat or serve as a side sauce.
Apple Mustard and Cheese Strudel  – Mustard in a dessert? You bet!
