Transforming Small Kitchens

By / Food / November 26th, 2013 / 1

Kitchens, even small ones, are where the family gathers… and where your guests usually hang during any house party. How do you transform a small kitchen into a place where people feel truly at home?

Light

Small kitchens usually have a limited amount of light. Add more by removing window treatments and installing recessed lighting on the underside of your cabinets. This will brighten your room and counter tops.

Colour

Aim for bright, light colours like whites and yellows. If you’re set on using a chocolate brown or navy blue, use it sparingly and in accents, like an appliance or a few cabinet doors; use it to pull the eye into the room.

Open Concept

Cabinetry in a small kitchen can feel oppressive. Remove the doors from the cabinets over the counter or replace them with glass doors. This opens up the room and creates depth. It’ll also inspire you to arrange your cupboards in interesting and neat ways.

Mirrors

Reflections create the illusion of space. Replace your appliances with stainless steel or treat your cabinets with a glossy paint instead of a matte. If you have the luxury of wall space, hang a mirror.

Be Inventive

The key to small kitchens is to use all the available space in an artful way. If there is limited shelf space, install hooks and magnetic strips for pots and pans or knives and stainless steel utensils. Remove a cupboard door and store the kettle, toaster and coffee maker there – this will keep your counter top clear and clean.

Having a small kitchen doesn’t have to be dreary and drab – it can be an opportunity to think outside the box and get really inventive.
