Showcase your personal style at home

I am weeks away from moving, yet again. This time, to what I hope will be a long-term home for our family. I am excited to finally have an opportunity to transfer my personal style to my home-styling.

What is personal style? I would define it as a sense of self; a way to display what makes us unique; a billboard to the rest of the world announcing who we are and what inspires us.

I have a strong sense of personal style, mostly showcased through my wardrobe and hair (a modern faux-hawk). On the other hand, as a busy, working mother, I have always struggled to find the time or muster up the effort to transfer that personal sense of style to my home.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of meeting and working with many talented people who have nailed home styling. I have stolen and borrowed a few tips and today, I have somewhat defined my personal style through my home. But, I must admit, some days, my home reflects nothing more than crazy!

Artwork

Display artwork that speaks to you, that moves you. Choose pieces that YOU want to see everyday. The right framing can help fit any piece in any room so, choose with your heart. I have a beautiful piece, hung in my front entry way. It is a canvas painted by my then 2 year old son.

Colour palette

If you tend to have a bolder sense of style, try a dramatic dark colour on an accent wall. If you’re a classic, pearls and pencil skirt kind of gal, a tastefully thought out black and white theme may appeal more to you. The key is to not over think it. Do what makes you feel good. I mostly have a bold sense of style but I need my home to be a serene, calming place. And, that IS my personal style. Those two opposing facets of my personality contribute to my billboard.

Accessories

Do you often wear gold? Or, do you prefer silver or white gold? Are you attracted to wood or glass? Ask yourself these questions before choosing accessories for your home. If you dislike wearing gold, chances are a gold gilded mirror or gold cabinet pulls are not for you.
