Remembering Riccardo Falchini

The wine world has lost a true pioneer with the sudden passing of Italy’s Riccardo Falchini on November 25, 2010, at the age of 75.

Falchini, owner of the San Gimignano-based Azienda Agricola Casale di Falchini Riccardo since the estate’s first plantings in 1968, is recognized as one of Tuscany’s most accomplished winemakers. His legacy of quality and passion now passes into the extremely capable hands of sons Michael, Chris and Leonardo along with their mother, Laina.

Tidings Contributing Editor, Tod Stewart, had the pleasure of meeting Riccardo, listening to his fascinating stories of the history of Falchini and San Gimignano and tasting some of the estate’s captivating wines while visiting the winery in 2008.

“I remember him as being a very gracious, knowledgeable and entertaining gentleman,” Stewart recalls. “He was also a man not only of great talent but of refreshing humility. Having overseen some 44 vintages, he was the first to admit he was always learning. But he was always teaching as well, and I expect the wines crafted under the eyes of Michael, Chris and Leonardo will carry Riccardo’s signature of excellence.”

Falchini’s wines include Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Chianti Colli Senesi as well as “Super Tuscans,” Spumante and Vin Santo.
