The Possibilities of Wallpaper

Wallpaper was big once upon a time. I remember picking out my princess paper when I was younger and helping my mom put up the wall paper in her bathroom. But, that home décor tool faded, or should I say, peeled away with time. It’s not as bad as it used to be. When used to accent or emphasize a feature of your home, it can be amazingly beautiful.

Illusions of Grandeur

Vertical stripes will make walls seem taller than they really are, especially in a small room. Aim for two colours – white and one other – to ensure that the wallpaper doesn’t overpower the small space.

One Wall Wonder

Make an impression with a bold print by covering one wall of your room. The effect is especially potent if you have an alcove or slanted ceilings that draw the eye to the pattern.

Look to the Clouds

If you find your ceilings boring (and who doesn’t?), spice them up with a glamorous print or a lacey cover to give your guests a reason to look to the clouds.

A New Perspective

Hang the same paper in two different ways to give your walls a bit of perspective. This is especially dramatic with bold lines – either stripes or a wavy print that goes from top to bottom. For the top half of the wall, hang the paper lengthwise, to create the illusion of height; for the bottom half of the wall, hang the paper widthwise.

Retro Refinishing

Find a vintage style or retro-esque wallpaper and use it on your dresser cupboards or table top to give your furniture a new look. Accentuate your bookshelves by lining the top of the shelves and back of the unit. Cover an old headboard with a refreshing finish.
