An Organized Playroom: Not just a Myth

By / Food / March 24th, 2014 / 1

Organizing the playroom can be a challenge – all those toys and art supplies, sprawled all over the floor. Here are a few tips that will help keep the playroom from looking like the site of a natural disaster.

Out with the old

Scour your space for toys that your children outgrew. Set aside a few sentimental items and donate the rest to charity. Toss old, dried up art and craft supplies – like play dough older than your child. This will give you more storage space for new toys.

Give them a little space

Clear the floor space – push heavy furniture against the wall, leaving only small light items your kids can move by themselves, like child-sized table and chairs. This creates a large, flat playing surface for games or just running around.

Storage wars

Invest in a good storage unit and bins. This could be a wall unit, with several drawers, closets, nooks and crannies, or a combination storage-and-bench unit, with colourful bins. Keep the bins see-through or topless to make it easy to see what’s inside.

Everything in its place

Designate a place for everything in the playroom. Markers have a tin; small toys have a drawer; and large toys have a corner. This makes it easier to find things and clean up at the end of the day. Keep the popular toys within reach of little arms and store the items that need adult supervision up high.

Quiet time

Create a reading nook in one corner for yourself (when the kids are playing with their toys) and your kids (when you all want to cuddle with a good book). Include a couch or maybe just a bunch of pillows with ample lighting and bookshelves for your kids’ favourites and a few of yours as well.
