Char-Broil TRU-Infrared Grill

We chose to review this particular model of the Char-Broil TRU-Infrared series because of its reduced footprint. Measuring just over 45” wide (with the folding side shelves extended) it’s an ideal grill for smaller urban spaces. It has a good overall grilling surface for its size; 340 sq. inches of primary cooking grates and an additional 125 sq. inches of upper, secondary grilling surface. That translates to enough space to cook a meal for 4-5 people. The model can also be converted to a natural gas grill.

What does TRU-Infrared mean and how does it work?

Traditional gas and charcoal grills emit convective heat (hot air) to cook food while the TRU-Infrared grills are designed to emit radiant heat. This is achieved with a patented emitter and burner plate – sitting between the burner and grates – eliminating a significant amount of hot air coming in direct contact with the food. Char-Broil, the company that manufactures the grills, claims its TRU-Infrared line delivers a minimum of 65% infrared heat. So, what does that mean for our food? Ideally, it should result in juicier meat as infrared heat penetrates without drying, locking in natural juices and flavours. The company claims that the even heat distribution makes cooking easier, with almost no flare-ups and reduced fuel consumption.

What do real-world users think?

Our research indicates, for the most part, the system delivers on many of its promises. The smaller version that we chose to review did get some complaints with regards to heat not being equally distributed, with the back of the grill being somewhat hotter. The other significant complaints were the amount of time it took the grill to warm up (15-20 minutes) and the clean-up was a bit labour intensive. Most users did agree that even with these faults, the BBQ was still one of the best on the market today.

Char-Broil TRU-Infrared Grill Performance T-22D Model retails for approximately $285 USD – a pretty good deal, in our opinion.
