Satisfy Your Ego

rieslingSome people might travel to warm getaways over March Break. Not me. Oh, I’d sure like to visit some exotic destination during that week of rest. The problem is that it usually isn’t a week of rest for me – more like a week of looming deadlines. In any case, why would I want to follow the crowds? Ah, a writer’s life is so full of demands…. Ok, not exactly. I mean, what better way to spend a week than tooling around wine country? One must always approach work with passion and conviction, right? This year, the weather’s been absolutely superb. The vines are already budding. I highly recommend you take a trip out to the vineyards closest to you and check out all of the activities going on.

2006 Narcissist Riesling, Edra’s Vineyard, Megalomaniac, Niagara ($17.95)

I had this one on the hottest day of the week. The sun was beaming over the land and the temperature had reached 21°C by early afternoon. This Riesling proved the perfect accompaniment to such a great (late winter!) day.

Straw yellow with a very slight greenish hue, its bouquet revealed undertones of petrol, fresh lime, minerals and a hint of citrus blossom and tropical fruit. Those aromas were reinforced on the palate: kiwi, melon and a hint of coconut teases the tongue. This Riesling has just enough acidity to create balance and intrigue. It is a totally refreshing tipple. I had it with grilled chicken caesar salad; but it would go very nicely with pasta in Alfredo sauce or a plate of grilled calamari.
