Wake Up Refreshed. Hangover Cures That Will Save Your Life

Hangovers … the side effect of an over-indulgent night out (St. Paddy’s Day festivities?!). Like a cold – you treat the symptoms; here are some tips on how.

Hair of the Dog

Have one alcoholic drink, preferably made with orange or tomato juice. Try one of our recipes:

Bloody Marys
Caeser’s
Mimosas

Why it works: Hangovers can be alcohol withdrawal and/or a blood sugar drop.

  • Wean yourself off alcohol and manage the withdrawal.
  • Drinking a bit of alcohol with juice helps boost blood sugar levels.

Alka-Seltzer

Drop two tablets in water; wait for it to dissolve. Drink and feel better.

Why it works: high stomach acid levels causes nausea. Sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda) reacts with the acid and settles the stomach. *NOTE: Read the directions before using *

Hydrate and Fuel your body

Eat high-carb food, and drink lots and lots of water to refuel your body. If water is too bland, try sports drinks.

Why it works: Your body craves water, carbs and nutrients. Try hash browns, breakfast potatoes or bananas, and dairy (yogurt, cheese, milk).

Limit your Caffeine

I almost feel like I’m swearing when I write that. One cup should be fine; resist the urge to have a second.

Why it works: coffee narrows blood vessels, boosting blood pressure, which can worsen hangover symptoms.

Sleep

If you can, roll over, get comfortable, close your eyes and go back to sleep.

Why it works: sleep is the only real “cure” for a hangover. Your body just needs to recover, naturally.

Prevention

The best “cure” is prevention. Drink a glass of water for every glass of alcohol. Try keeping a refillable water bottle by your side. Most important of all – don’t mix your alcohols!

Hair of the dog does nothing but delay your hangover… and then make it worse. I love the idea of it, but scientifically, it’s actually worse than doing nothing – and definitely worse than drinking the exact same things (tomato juice, juice etc.) without alcohol in them. A hangover isn’t a series of withdrawal symptoms – it’s about toxins in your body combined with dehydration. The best thing you can do is flush those toxins out (by drinking water) and replacing lost salts/electrolytes. The only good hangover cure is time and gatorade.
