Gardening Websites for the Anti-Green Thumb

By / Food / May 5th, 2014 / 3

I don’t have a green thumb. In fact, if there were a colour that epitomized the opposite of a green thumb, that would be the colour of mine. Luckily, in the age of Google and online references, my garden has a higher chance of survival. Read on for a list of references, ideal for other anti-green thumbs like myself.

Canadian Gardening

They’ve got articles for everything from small gardens to gardening events. I go to this site for the harder questions – like what is a hard zone and why does that matter exactly? The site itself is a bit cluttered – it’s the online version of the Canadian Garden magazine – but the content is worth the search.

The Plant Encyclopedia

The name is pretty self-explanatory – it’s an encyclopedia of 300,300 + plants. You can search by types of plant – tree, shrub, perennial, annual and more; each entry provides a run-down of cultivation and characteristics plus a brief explanation about the genus.

The Royal Horticultural Society

In addition to “jobs” for each month – things you should do specifically for the season (at least in the UK) – the UK’s leading gardening charity provide advice catered to your garden. Just select a category and refine by sunlight, soil type, garden characteristics and more.

Garden Web

Touted as the internet’s largest home and garden community, Garden Web is a collection of forums, FAQs, tools and resources for the everyday gardener. Their calendar of events reaches across Canada and the United States, with a few in the UK.

A Way to Garden

My favourite part about this website is the subheadings – when to start seed, chores by month and garden FAQs – they’re exactly the things a beginner like me needs to know right off the bat. Their How-To section is nothing to scoff at either.
