DIY Bookends

By / Food / September 15th, 2014 / 3

Now that we’ve organized our library, it’s time to make some attractive bookends that reflect your personality and taste.

Star Jar

Materials: two heavy glass jars, glass paint, painter’s tape, battery powered tea lights
Draw stars on the painter’s tape, cut them out and stick on the jars. Paint a few coats over the jars – you can paint over the stars altogether or just the edges. When the paint has dried, remove the painter’s tape to reveal the star-shaped spots (if you’re having trouble, use an exacto knife to trace the edges). Add tea lights for ambience.

Book Brick

Materials: two bricks, paint
Paint the bricks to look like books – use existing titles for inspiration or make some up using your family’s name to add a personal touch.

Covered Brick

Materials: two bricks, fabric swatches or craft paper
If you’re not into painting, grab two pieces of fabric or craft paper (preferably a colour that matches the colour scheme of your room) and cover the bricks for bookends that match your decor.

Honey Bear

Materials: two bear-shaped honey jars, metallic paint
Make miniature bear statues by painting bear-shaped honey jars with gold or silver paint. Fill with sand or water so that they’re heavy enough to hold up your books.

Rope Block

Read the tutorial here
Wrap a wood block (or any block shaped item) with attractive rope to make a beautiful rope block bookends. If you keep them small, you can stack them or use tall ones for those large books.

Rocks

Materials: two large rocks, paint
This one is simple – look for two large rocks, clean them and use as is. Or you can paint them with gold paint, tie-dye them, get your kids to spruce them up a bit, the sky is the limit!
