Decorate for Function

By / Food / February 13th, 2014 / 2

My entry way is pretty bare. In January, I was relieved to remove the festive decorations. But now? It’s not even serving its purpose of keeping our shoes and boots from cluttering the doorway. Today, I decorate for function.

Bottoms Up

The welcome mat is a must-have; for one with style and function, I suggest these online shopping sites. Aim for dark colours that won’t show stains; if you persist lighter colours, ensure it’s rubber or machine washable.

If the Shoe Fits

My entry has very little room for a shoe rack, however the hallway is right there and is perfect for a bench/shoe rack combo – easy access seating and no more shoe clutter.

Take a Seat

Having something to perch on while struggling with pesky laces is essential. The above bench/shoe rack combo is one solution; other options include a stool that serves as a table for keys and pocket items or a foldable chair that stays folded until needed.

A Place to Hang your Hat

Never underestimate the power of coat hooks by the front door – try novelty hooks to add a little pizzazz to your walls. If all else fails, a tall coat rack will stay out of the way in the corner.

Take Note

A white board or cork board makes leaving reminders such as “pick up milk” or “call mom” easier to do when you’re heading out, which let’s face it, is when we remember most of the things we need to do.

A Bit of Eye Candy

Add flare to your entry walls –a painting or fancy mirror. So long as it is pleasing to look at for when you or your guests are waiting for the last person to finish finicking with her laces.
