When you’re in a province with over 50,000 farms, it’s almost impossible not to cook with fresh ingredients. Regina may be the province’s capital, but don’t be surprised if most of your food comes from the local farms in the surrounding area. If you know where to look, you’ll find that Regina is filled with hidden culinary gems.

Here are five of the best restaurants in Saskatchewan’s capital.

Hunter Gatherer Vegetarian Diner

Hunter Gatherer offers a completely vegetarian menu and self-describes as a rustic Ma & Pa vegetarian diner. Their menu includes everything you’d expect at a diner including eggs, milkshakes, root beer floats and burgers (vegetarian, of course).

What to try: Black bean wrap, homemade soups, falafel wrap

Caraway Grill

If you’re looking for the best Indian food in Regina, look no further. As soon as you walk in, expect to be hit with the aroma of a myriad of spices. The owner, Parveen Singh, opened the restaurant in 2013 with a handpicked group of chefs who focus on the details of every dish. You can expect to spend less than $50 for two people, so even if you’re on a budget, you can enjoy a night out.

What to try: Prawn masala, garlic nan, spinach paneer, chicken korma, mango lassi

Fresh and Sweet

If you’re looking for somewhere, well, fresh and sweet, try Fresh and Sweet. It’s among the best spots in the city to stop for brunch. They have a large menu that includes everything from smoked salmon paninis to gelato. You can also take a quick stroll through Victoria Park to visit the sister restaurant, Fresh on Hamilton for lunch.

What to try: Unicorn milkshakes, eggs benedict, white chocolate banana bread French toast

Avenue

Avenue is the first restaurant in Regina open by Dale Mackay, a past winner of Top Chef Canada. Avenue is classy enough that you feel like you’re going somewhere special even though it intends to be an everyday restaurant. The diverse menu focuses on French cuisine.

What to try: Scallops, beef Wellington with seared foie gras, chocolate soufflé

Crave Kitchen + Wine Bar

Crave offers an excellent handcrafted food and drink menu for a special night. Out with somebody you want to impress? The stylish interior makes it a perfect date restaurant. Crave sources ingredients locally when it can, and if you’re willing to put yourself in the hands of the chefs, they won’t disappoint with the daily special.

What to try: Daily specials, tongue in cheek, artisan cheeses, wild salmon pastrami
