3 Vancouver Sandwich Hot Spots You Must Try
for the cool-kids:
MEAT & BREAD, Gastown
You’ll know you’re having a good day if the line up at Vancouver’s cult-status sandwich spot is short enough that you wait inside the door.
Worth the wait, you ask… only if you’re in the mode for a damn-good sandwich.
Then yes. Yes it is.
Worshipped for it’s porchetta starlet, I decided to steer left of centre and try out what really is the ultimate classic: a grilled cheese.
The tang of a thin, perfectly toasted sourdough was subtle and only complemented the gooey, aged white cheddar.
Threads of red onion added some extra zip and all together I was reminded of a traditional Swiss cheese fondue; creamy, strong, and comforting as hell.
A couple colourful pools of tangy yellow mustard and what looked to be ketchup (but turned out to be a pretty lit hot sauce!) are there for your dabbling.
Personally, I think the fondue-fake-out is delicious enough all on it’s own.
for those who like› it custom:
HARVEST DELI, Kitsilano
If you know, you know.
Chances are you only heard about Harvest if you walked by or got some pointers from someone in the neighborhood. That said, this plain little deli is gaining some serious Yelp cred, thanks to consistently stellar sandwiches and the kind of friendly over-the-counter chat you usually only come across in a New York bodega.
The sandwich selection is basically limitless; all your deli meat varietals are on offer, plus some free range chicken, smoked salmon and just about every other protein you can think to neatly between some bread. Get creative and get ready to have to run to Kits on your lunch breaks – they don’t deliver! And we don’t really want them to.
for the exotic hipsters
TUNG HING BAKERY, Main Street
It’s 2018. We can’t talk about sandwiches without talking about Bahn Mi.
The two most important aspects of the magnificent Vietnamese sub: a perfectly light and crackly baguette and some serious pate inside.
Tung Hing has both and it’s line-up of loyal customers is evidence.
Please note: the bakery attached has a MEAN apple fritter on offer, just in case you’re looking to double down on your daily carb intake.
