Xperience: Fox Run Vineyards

By / Wine + Drinks / August 13th, 2013 / 2

What happens when a dairy farm morphs into a winery? We get a family run, award-winning winery that has mastered the art of premium, limited-production winemaking. The Osborn family makes wines that express the particular nuances of the terroir.

Fox Run Vineyards sits on 50 acres on the shores of Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes area of New York. From the time the first grapes were planted in 1984, the Osborns laid out clear objectives. The first was to care for their vineyard in the most sustainable of ways; the second was to ensure that every vintage employed minimal intervention by the winemaker.

Over the last 29 years, the Osborns, with help from veteran winemaker, Peter Bell and vineyard manager, John Kaiser, have managed to grow top quality grapes without irrigation, relying entirely on Mother Nature to provide the right amount of rain when needed. They have also made sure that the vineyard is drought resistant by encouraging a naturalized forest full of wildlife. That planned ecosystem is balanced by the kestrels and bats that call the farm home.

This winery is an example of how to let the grapes speak for themselves. Fox Run specializes in wines made from Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Lemberger, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Noir.
