#WineWednesday: Ontario’s Award Winning Whites

By / Wine + Drinks / August 28th, 2013 / 1

Sometimes I’m a little late to the party, but I do eventually get there.  Earlier this week I was going through some of my notes from the Ontario Wine Awards and its companion event, Sip & Savour Ontario (held in June), and it struck me once again what wonderful wines are being made in Ontario.  Now I could bore you to death about the reasons why we make such wonderful wines, or I could just ask you to get out there and give these award winners a try … I think that’s much easier and much more fun – don’t you?

Flat Rock Cellars 2010 Nadja’s Vineyard Riesling ($19.95)

Gold Medal … The wine named for mom strikes again.  Mineral-driven and loaded with white peach and apple. Palate continues the mineral and piles on the lime with good acidity and great length to the finish.

Inniskillin 2012 Reserve Viognier ($19.95)

Gold Medal … Great mouthfeel, is a tad on the sweet side, or is that the fruitiness? 3 months in a combination of new and used oak you’ll find elements of peach, lemon, apple and pear; the finish adds a little kick of white pepper.

Rockway Vineyards 2011 Small Lot Reserve Chardonnay ($18.95)

Gold Medal … New winemaker David Stasiuk has taken the reins and made wine a more serious endeavor at Rockway.  This 171-case produced Chardonnay has great aromas of butter, vanilla and clove and a palate that’s creamy in nature with butter, vanilla, spice and caramel peaches.  Great value.
