Rosehall Run Prince Edward County

We’ve reached the final region of our tour of Ontario wineries, and saved some of the best for last. Prince Edward County is turning out some really intriguing work these days. Let’s take a closer look.

Rosehall Run Vineyards

1243 Greer Road
Wellington, ON

Before “the County” was a thing, Dan Sullivan was a thing. A larger-than-life kind of winemaker, with a vision for what the place could be, what one could do with a cool climate and innovative technique. Prince Edward County has grown up since then, but Dan is still doing his thing, and still doing it as one of the best.

In 2001, they planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. Then, they built a modest barn to press, produce and store things. As their popularity grew, they ended up blasting a 7,200 square foot cellar and production facility straight into the limestone foundations of the land.

Now, they have 25 acres of vines, growing Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Muscat and Tempranillo. The original barn is now their tasting facility, where you can taste the finished product surrounded by history. To get priority access, consider signing up for their wine club, which offers carefully selected wines, some not available anywhere else, and detailed descriptions to maximize your enjoyment.

Trail Estate Winery

416 Benway Rd
Hillier, ON

Honest. Elegant. Risk-taking. These are just some of the ways people have described Trail Estate Winery’s approach to their craft. In addition to their yearly releases, they hold back a certain percentage of each batch, watching it mature over time, and releasing it in special editions when their master tasters believe it is at the peak of maturity.

The Sproll family, owner/operators of Trail Estate Winery, already knew a thing or two about fermented products when they started making wine, having operated Sproll’s Fine German Bakery for over 30 years (one of the founders of Ontario’s artisanal bread community). They then retired and started making wines in batches as small as a single barrel.

With batches that small, their wine club is the obvious outlet. On a monthly, quarterly or semi-annual basis, you can have access to Winemaker Mackenzie Brisbois’ custom selections, along with their insights, free shipping and exclusive winery events.

Grange of Prince Edward Winery

990 Closson Road
Hillier, ON

Grange has a simple philosophy of making wines “Listen Well”. In their case, that means listening to nature and letting it guide their vintages season to season, producing the absolute best of each unique situation, and letting the grapes say whatever it is they want to say that time. And then doing it again.

On a warm summer day, you can rent a picnic basket from the shop, and fill it with cheeses, charcuterie, and the wine (or wines) of your choice. Then, head out onto the rolling hills of their vineyard, and have a memorable meal. They also have a patio, with an equally stunning view, which can be reserved for larger groups.

The Grange of Prince Edward Case Club lets you customize your membership to suit your individual desires: with free shipping and access to complimentary tours and tastings, it’s an excellent way to get to know them better and save money on some truly excellent wines.

Over the course of our Canadian wine club series, we’ve explored what the country has to offer, the vast varieties of varietals available, and the spread of places one might enjoy them. If you’ve missed any, we encourage you to go back and check them all out.
