Winnipeg may have a reputation for being one of the coldest cities in the world, but once summer hits, temperatures often sore past 30 degrees Celsius. What better way to spend those long, summer nights than with a cold drink and good company? No matter which season you’re visiting, here are five bars in Winnipeg you need to check out.

Prohibition

If you’re looking for live music and an energetic atmosphere, look no further. Prohibition opened in 2018 as a speakeasy-style bar with live music and craft cocktails. You’ll have to travel through the hidden door and staircase to find this bar, decorated to look like it’s from the 1930s. The food menu includes pizza, various shareables and wings.

The Toad in the Hole

Need a dram of scotch to help you beat Winnipeg’s arid summer months? The Toad in the Hole has made its home in the middle of Osborne Village since 1990. It has a reputation as a prime location to listen to international artists and has a daily happy hour from 2pm until 7pm. You can also find all the regular British pub staples and a nice selection of beers on tap.

Shannon’s Irish Pub and Eatery

If you’re looking for somewhere casual to grab a glass of wine, local craft beer or fine scotch, this might be the spot for you. This family-run business is known for its welcoming staff and commitment to making your evening a memorable one. They regularly have live music, Celtic dancers and karaoke.

The Mitchell Block

Stop by the dining room or lounge at The Mitchell Block to grab a cocktail or specialty pasta dish. The elegant interior makes you feel like you’re lost in Manhattan or Beverly Hills opposed to the Canadian prairies. If you still have room after your meal, try the cheesecake or crème brûlée.

Yellow Dog Tavern

If you want to get cozy with the local hipsters, the Yellow Dog Tavern might be the perfect spot. You can stop in at lunch for a tray of nachos or come in later to meet up with friends before heading to a Jets game. Bison burgers anybody?
