Tasted: Great Summer Wines

By / Wine + Drinks / August 7th, 2013 / 2

Every season calls out for particular wines. In the winter, we tend to gravitate to heavier wines to suit the heartier fare we love to eat when the weather’s blustering. At the other extreme is summer. Lounging by the pool, there’s little that’s better than a lighter wine to refresh us and pair graciously with the lighter food we’re enjoying, like salads and grilled meats. Quench has compiled a list of great summer wines that will keep you feeling cool, but that will also match perfectly with whatever you happen to be dining on.

Pio Cesare Gavi DOCG

Gavi tends to be quite simple and “uneventful”, lacking a lot of character, but not this one. Fresh and lively with a lovely brightness, citrus, bitter almond, and a racy mineral character. Refreshing and very drinkable. Great with fritto misto.

Maleta Old Vines Dry

Technically, this wine is a demi – sec styled bubbly, as there is only very light sweetness present. From 100% Riesling, this sparkler is made the old fashioned way, and exudes petrol, yeast, peach and honey. The bubbles are small, creamy and linger for a while. Chill this baby down and serve it as an aperitif, or with canapés.

Tawse Wismer Vineyard Lakeview Block Riesling

The perfume of peach, bergamot, orange blossom and lime, working their magic on the senses, are built on a medium-bodied stature. In the mouth, minerals, spice and bergamot carry a long finish. There is some sweetness, but it works a tightrope balancing act well with the acid, giving a dry impression. It is delicious with choucroute or red curry shrimps.
